We are situated near the historic market town of Castillon-la-Bataille (where, in 1452, the English finally lost the hundred year war. The annual re-enactment of this battle is held in July and August, and is truly spectacular). The prosperity of this region was largely founded on the English presence and their taste for the wine, so historic memory may account for the warmth with which the current British invasion is received!

Within twenty minutes drive is the medieval town, and UNESCO heritage site of Saint Emilion, surrounded by the chateaux and vineyards of this most prestigious wine appellation. Virtually all of the 12,000 wine producers of the Bordeaux region welcome visitors for wine tastings, though bookings may be required.

While a car is essential, we strongly recommend using the local rail travel for visits to Bordeaux and along the Dordogne valley to Bergerac and Sarlat, both truly worthwhile day trips.

The river Dordogne is the spectacular backdrop to activities, and offers canoeing, as well as a rowing club which welcomes visitors. The vineyards, woodlands and uncluttered local roads provide every opportunity to get out and about either walking, or on bikes (or on horseback). We have a good selection of bikes which we offer for use without charge. As keen golfers we can advise on the many course within easy travel, and offer golf clubs on loan, saving you from paying transport costs.

Local restaurants favour traditional French cuisine, they but are very good at that. We have done our best to sample them and will recommend our favourites.
